Who benefits when you drink your favorite Diet Coke or Mountain Dew?  Not you.  Did you know that one can of soda is empty calories with no nutritional value whatsoever and can be loaded with artificial colors, artificial flavors, and preservatives such as sulfites?  A single can of soda can have up to ten teaspoons of sugar, 30 to 50 mg of caffeine, and 100 to 150 calories.
Plus, phosphoric acid in the carbonation is detrimental to the alkaline balance necessary in healthy individuals and contributes to weak bones and osteoporosis.

Diet soda with aspartame or NutraSweet is a chemical used as a sugar substitute. It has been linked with numerous potential side effects including brain tumors, seizures, diabetes, behavioral disorders, and birth defects. It has also been linked with weight gain because the body is fooled by the chemical, forcing it into a survival mode whereby it holds onto weight thinking it is in starvation mode.

Soda pop has been associated with osteoporosis, tooth decay, diabetes, weight gain, and heart disease. It accounts for approximately twenty-five per cent of all beverages consumed in the United States. School age children are the biggest consumers. The increase in children’s obesity, diabetes, and behavioral problems is generating more awareness about the negative impact soda pop can have on children’s health and development. More schools are choosing to either reduce the amount of vending machines with soda pop while including more healthy alternatives such as pure fruit juices and bottled water or eliminating soda pop vending machines entirely.

Do you want to improve your overall health and longevity?  Stop the soda pop habit. It is not glamorous to health.  Drink pure water such as reverse osmosis water (Aquafina, for instance, is purified using reverse osmosis).  If carbonation has a hook on you, sparkling mineral water is a better selection. Just say NO to soda pop. Say YES to yourself and put yourself in charge. Make a conscious decision to be able to proclaim, “Yes, I am contributing to my health today by drinking pure water.”  For in the end your health, either good or bad, is a culmination of the many habits you make day after day. Your health really is your choice.

We’ve talked in depth on the effects that artificial sweeteners such as aspartame can have on the body - Click here to see all of our posts. I recently ran across an good article by Dr. Mercola regarding artificial sweeteners that I wanted to share with you.  It’s a short and sweet article, so I’d recommend taking a couple minutes to read it.  There’s also a wonderful YouTube video of a news story done by a Fox station that will that will be of interest.  I’ve included this video below - I would definitely recommend taking 10 minutes to watch it - it just may be what pushes you to eliminate artificial sweeteners from your diet.  Click here to read Dr. Mercola’s article and to watch the You.

Multitudes of studies have shown that artificial sweeteners cause cancer. A recent study by the Ramazzini Foundation shows that aspartame causes a dose-dependent increase in cancers (lymphomas, leukemias and breast cancers) when consumed at levels approximately the same as found in diet soft drinks.

What was the FDA’s response when it learned of this study?
The FDA responded by saying it “finds no reason to alter its previous conclusion that aspartame is safe as a general purpose sweetener in food.”

The FDA is not looking out for your health and neither are the artificial sweetener companies.  Therefore, you must take responsibility for your own health.  The responsibility is and has always been yours; do not think for one second that because the FDA approved a product or a drug that it is safe.  You must make the final decision.  Choose Wisely.

Splenda’s advertising campaign is something like “Splenda tastes like sugar because it is made from sugar.”

Sucralose is approximately 600 times sweeter than sugar.  Because it’s so much sweeter than sugar, maltodextrin is added to Splenda (and other chemical sweeteners) so it will measure like sugar. http://www.fda.gov/FDAC/features/1999/699_sugar.html

Since we have been talking about weight loss and artificial sweeteners, let’s look at how the maltodextrin in these chemical sweeteners actually promotes weight gain.
Before we get into maltodextrin, we need to discuss the glycemic index (GI) for a minute now.  The GI rates carbohydrate-containing foods based on their ability to raise blood glucose levels within two hours. Carbohydrates that raise the blood sugar the fastest have the highest glycemic index.

Here is why foods with high GIs cause weight gain:
Eating foods with high GI rapidly increases blood glucose levels.  This spike in blood glucose levels needs to be balanced.  Therefore, the pancreas is triggered to produce insulin. The insulin, then, balances this spike in blood glucose by converting the excessive amounts of glucose into fat.

For this reason, there has been a lot of interest in the glycemic index recently.  Sugary foods cause a spike in blood glucose, which can lead to fat being added to the body.

So, what does this have to do with maltodextrin?
Well, maltodextrin is actually a type of sugar.  In fact, according to Elaine Gottschall, maltodextrin is “the worst of the small molecules of sugars. It is a very short chain of glucose molecules (derived from starch) which has a link of two glucose units bonded by what is called a 1-6 alpha bond. The chances of digestion are practically nil. It, therefore, will feed bacteria and because of its particular structure, I feel it is worse than even lactose.” http://www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info/knowledge_base/kb/maltodextrin.htm

Furthermore, maltodextrin has an exceedingly high GI rating of 137…this is almost as high as sugar itself!!!!  It logically follows, then, that consumption of maltodextrin should not be associated with weight loss. Consequently, since artificial sweeteners contain maltodextrin (it doesn’t matter if they are void of calories) do not promote weight loss!

The following is a list of sugars and their corresponding GI ratings:
Fructose 32
Lactose 65
Honey 83
High fructose corn syrup 89
Sucrose 92
Glucose 137
Maltodextrin 137
Sugar, White 142
Glucose tablets 146
Maltose 150

Another type of artificial sweetener on the market today is Acesulfame-Potassium.

Today, we are going to look really briefly at Acesulfame-Potassium. Acesulfame-Potassium is also known as Acesulfame K or Ace K.  Ace K…A catchy name, isn’t it?  That’s exactly what the marketing gurus and PR people hope you think.  Ace K is a feel good name…in fact, a family name.  With a name like that, it’s hoped that you just assume that Ace K is safe for you and your family.  Furthermore, the full name, Acesulfame Potassium, sounds healthy because it contains potassium.

In fact, because of the high concentration of potassium in bananas, Acesulfame Potassium makes me think of bananas.  However, as you have been learning any artificial sweetener, no matter what its name is not safe for you or your family.  Please do not be tricked by this clever marketing.

Since we have been on the topic of weight loss, let’s quickly touch on this topic and Ace K.  When Ace K is broken down by the body, one of byproducts in Acetoacetamide, which has been shown to affect the thyroid gland in rats, rabbits, and dogs.  In case you weren’t aware, the thyroid is one of the major players in maintaining proper metabolism.  If you do not have a healthy thyroid, your metabolism will be out of balance, you will feel tired and you will probably gain weight.

Never noticed Ace K on the food labels????
It’s in Gatorade Propel and Gatorade G2—A couple very common drinks at the moment.  Please do not be fooled.  Because the name is camouflaged with the name of a prevalent mineral, you need to hunt carefully to catch it on labels.

The lesson for today is twofold:
1. A catchy name does not equal a safe product
2. Artificial sweeteners—like we have been discussing—actually promote weight gain.

According to the International Journal of Obesity, artificial sweeteners may promote obesity.  In a study, rats that were fed artificially-sweetened foods tended to overeat foods containing real sweeteners, thus leading to weight gain.  The same can be said for humans too.  At a conscious level, people may believe that because they have a diet Coke, they are entitled to a double cheeseburger and fries too.  Thus, the “diet” part of their meal tricks them into consuming an outrageous amount of calories.  On a subconscious level, our bodies and minds are probably tricked just like the rats, and we probably subconsciously eat more than we normally would.  When we eat artificial sweeteners, our body doesn’t recognize it as food, so we have to eat more food for the body to think it’s getting proper nutrition.

Furthermore, man-made chemicals like artificial sweeteners are void of any nutritional value.  Nutrients are essential to a healthy body.  In fact, improper nutrition may be why you overeat.  If you overeat, it is most likely because your body is starving for nutrients.  Thus, you eat and eat and eat because you’re body is craving nutrients.  Give your body the proper nutrients and watch the weight melt away.  Alka Slim is an all-natural product specifically designed to provide the proper nutrients to help you lose weight.  Try it risk free for 45 days.

Did you know that 50% of the artificial sweetener aspartame is a form of a phenylalanine isolate?

Today, let’s learn about the amino acid phenylalanine.  Phenylalanine is a neurotoxin. As you may know, neurotoxins overstimulate the neurons in the brain to the point of cellular death.  Furthermore, a myriad of problems including ADD and ADHD can be elicited through too much Phenylalanine.

Another problem with phenylalanine is that it dominates enzyme sites in the body.  Basically what happens is that phenylalanine suppresses the formation of dopamine and serotonin.

So what effect does this have on weight loss?
Well, serotonin is the neurotransmitter that reports carbohydrate metabolism. Unfortunately, an absence of proper serotonin levels means that your body doesn’t think it is getting enough carbohydrates.  So when you consume aspartame, serotonin production is decreased and you crave more and more food which leads to more and more weight being added to your body.

Furthermore, dopamine is the neurotransmitter associated with the satisfied feeling you get after a meal.  However, when you consume aspartame, dopamine production is reduced, thus it takes more and more food to feel satisfied and you will most likely have insatiable cravings.

Aspartame inhibits important chemical reactions from taking place in your body.  As a result, you eat more and more food and gain more and more weight.  Do not be fooled by this 0 calorie myth!

As you may know, many diet sodas, such as Diet Coke are made with NutraSweet (aspartame).

As was mentioned in the first part of this series, Aspartame is made by joining two amino acids with a methyl ester group.  Immediately, this raises concerns with weight loss since Methyl alcohol is known around the medicine community for its ability to inhibit metabolism.  This should raise a red flag in your mind.  Anyone who is concerned with weight should be concerned with metabolism.  Thus, a slowed metabolism will ultimately lead to weight gain.  So much for the DIET in Diet Coke.

Once again, 0 calories does not mean that a product is a smart alternative for weight loss. There are just too many factors associated with man-made artificial sweeteners and the body’s functioning.

Today, we are going to look briefly at some of the main reasons why artificial sweeteners may actually be detrimental to your weight. The following four points are directly from mercola.com.  These are very compelling issues to think about until the next email when we will go more in-depth on how artificial sweeteners are detrimental to your health.

1. According to an article in Technology Review, ‘aspartame may actually stimulate appetite and bring on a craving for carbohydrates.’
2. An article in Utne Reader claims, ‘researchers believe that any kind of sweet taste signals body cells to store carbohydrates and fats, which in turn causes the body to crave more food.’
3. From the San Francisco Chronicle, Jean Weininger states that ‘studies have shown that people who use artificial sweeteners don’t necessarily reduce their consumption of sugar — or their total calorie intake…Having a diet soda makes it okay to eat a double cheeseburger and a chocolate mousse pie.’
4. The American Cancer Society (1986) documented that people with diets containing chemical sweeteners gained more weight than those who avoided them.

Chemically made products mess with your body in many different ways.  Do not be fooled by the calorie myth.  These artificial sweeteners harm your body in many different ways.

For a while now, there has been this lie, spreading like a virus that says the number of calories people consume determines their weight.  We are here to tell you today that calories are not the sole determinate of weight gain.  Yes, excessive calories can lead to weight gain; however, many of us know people who can eat whatever they want and not gain a pound.  On the other hand, many of us know people who eat virtually nothing yet are 50 pounds overweight.

There are many components to one’s weight.  For instance, did you know that the source of calories plays a role in your weight?  500 calories from a cheeseburger is very different than 500 calories from an apple and a large salad.  To read more about our thought on this phenomenon, please visit http://mortersupplements.com/symptoms/natural-weight-loss.html

That is all for today.  The one thing we want to leave you with is this:  Please do not be fooled by the fact that artificial sweeteners have no calories.  You have already read over numerous reasons why artificial sweeteners are detrimental to your health.  Over the next few days you will be reading reasons why artificial sweeteners also make you fatter.
